Battles. We all have them, some are internal while others are external. Most of the battles we try to fight on our own until we come into the knowledge of God as Jehovah Nissi, our Banner of Victory.
Jehovah Nissi was introduced when Moses built an altar to God in honor of a huge victory he received. In Exodus 17: 8-16, we find out about the battle the Israelites won against the Amalekites who had a habit of being bullies and attacking those they perceived as weak. When they came, Moses immediately demonstrated his faith in God by taking the rod God had given him to free the Israelites up to the top of a hill. Every time Moses lifted his hands with the rod the Israelites were winning and when he put his hands down the Amalekites started to win. With this knowledge, Aaron and Hur started helping Moses to keep his hands raised with the rod and sure enough the Israelites defeated Amalekites.
One thing that stands out to me is how the battle was won. It was not won from men being skilled fighters. In fact, the Israelites or Amalekites could have won, but it was Moses’s dependence on God that allowed God to give them the power to win.
As mentioned before, we all have battles, but God has promised to be our Jehovah Nissi giving us victory over all the Amalekites in our lives. Our only task is to believe and use what he’s given us to fight in the battle. Moses has a rod and guess what we have... God’s word, spirit, and power!
Today, make a list of all the battles you have faced in the past and next to each one write how God have you the victory. I’m sure you will find that many on the victories you received were beyond your human ability. Now, list your current battles and invite God to be Jehovah Nissi over those battles. Tell him your eyes and ears are open to know how to use the rod he has given you to achieve victory. Don’t worry about how the victory will manifest. Just trust who God said he is, listen and obey!
