Bread of Life
Have you ever heard someone make a statement that seemed impossible? It sounded so outlandish that you would question the sanity of the person who said it. Well that is how many felt in John 6 when Jesus revealed himself as the Bread of Life (v. 35). Prior to this revelation, he fed 5,000 people with just 5 loaves of bread and 2 small fish. I don’t find it a coincidence that he showed himself a provider of natural food before revealing that he is the provider of eternal life.
Many doubted his being not understanding what it really meant for Jesus to be the bread of life who gives eternal life. Jesus goes on to explain that his purpose is to fulfill the will of God and he further reiterates that our only task is to believe in who he says he is and we will have eternal life.
Sometimes, we hunger and thirst for things that will only give temporary relief. Those things can be people, habits, money, and even goala. We can spend hours seeking these things and feeling empty all over again. On the contrary, being filled with Christ always results in more rather than less. The more we seek him, communicate with him, and meditate on his word, the more we are filled with his spirit. This leads to the transformation needed to abide in him and exercise his grace to overcome things that once hindered our growth.
Knowing Jesus is the key to eternal life gives me a sense of peace especially seeing that he himself is telling us this in John 6. It’s not a secret. Jesus is willing and ready to satisfy our hunger and pour into us.
Spend some time reading John 6 and have a conversation with God about his role as the Bread of Life. If you find yourself stuck, write down or ask the questions that try to create doubt in your mind. Take the chance on Christ for eternal life is waiting for you!!
