Too many times we try to do things that can only be done through the power of God. We try to answer all the questions by making constant rationalizations and we begin to participate in more doing rather than listening. I hear so many people say oh I’m grinding, losing sleep without ever feeling or looking restored, constantly chasing money to pay bills or even worse to keep up an appearance, but never having anything saved, or even being anxious or stressed and trying to do things to fix problems…If this is you, consider yourself one of many!
I used to be like that. I call it being a busy body, always doing something, but never sitting down to listen or rest. I did it through work, school, and even church. I would always be busy and sometimes, I felt great pride at the fact that I was able to juggle it all until I got really sick and reality set in that I was doing way too much! During that time of being sick, I was forced to quiet things down and simply be still. God used that situation to teach me a valuable lesson on what it truly meant to operate out of faith and be still versus operating out of fear and trying to do things on my own.
He taught me that being still didn’t mean I wasn’t doing anything, but more so, I was doing the right thing. I was finally seeking him through prayer and worship, listening, and then moving. Was it an easy transition? Absolutely not! I was challenged to trust God beyond my own ability and I don’t know about you, but I’ve struggled will relinquishing control. Thank God for deliverance though!
This process of allowing God to be the shepherd of every aspect of your life requires you to silence all distractions around you. Does that mean you have to go into prayer for 2-4 hours? No, you’d be surprised how much you can hear from God in 15 minutes, but whatever length of time you spend with God, it needs to be rid of all distractions. If social media or TV seem to be the reason you don’t spend as much time with God, then you may want to consider letting those things go for a while. Especially since we are not to make idols out of anything…Yes, social media, TV, and even people can become idols, so check for that! Don’t get caught up in attention, money, and external factors…consider your soul and if it feels restless and drained you may want to shut things down for a while and hear from God clearly.
Here are a couple scriptures to get you started in your quiet time with God:
Be still before the Lord and wait patiently for him; fret not yourself over the one who prospers in his way, over the man who carries out evil devices! Psalm 37:7
“Be still, and know that I am God. I will be exalted among the nations; I will be exalted in the earth!” Psalm 46:10
I’ll leave you with this prayer, because we all need to understand that it is through prayer that things begin to change. May this seed being sown manifest a harvest of spiritual acceleration in your life as you learn to be still and let God do what he does!
I come to you on behalf of every person who reads this post. Lord, we thank you for being our shepherd, teacher, instructor, provider, healer, way maker, deliverer, and so much more. We are grateful that we have no need to worry or be anxious because you have already given us victory over every obstacle we face.
Lord, we seek your presence and invite you to take the lead in our lives. Silence our thoughts and remove all distractions. Help us to hear from you clearly and give us the wisdom needed to operate in the way that you would have us to move. Father God, we humble ourselves and surrender every aspect of our lives. No longer will we operate out of our own strength, but we will allow you to move through us. Father we cast every care upon you and receive your rests. Lord, thank you for taking the time to invest in us. Show us what you see in us and every person we encounter, so that we may love ourselves and others just as you do.
Father, thank you for teaching us to be still and to trust your will and your ways for our thoughts are not your thoughts and your ways our not our ways. Lord, we worship you and lift you up giving you all the glory, honor, and the power forever. In Jesus’ name amen!
